1. Plan your content writing and think about page layout in advance.
Remember that well written content has the potential to reach a large audience of readers and when writing for the website you are responsible for representing your company. Make the content you are delivering useful, creative, and up to date. Think in advance about the content that needs updating or adding to your website and make a plan of how you are going to tackle it. Think about your page layout; make the page visually pleasing as well as informative. Using lists / bullet points is a good way of displaying content for the reader to scan read and then add more information further down the page for further reading. As I have done in this blog post.
2.Write original content.
Due to the Penguin and Panda updates from Google, duplicate content is a major no-no. You will not get your website ranking by copying and pasting content from other websites. Researching topics on the internet is fine, but you then need to put your findings into your own words.
3.Web page length.
Ideally to stand a better chance that your content is indexed in the search engines your pages should contain 300 to 1,000 words in total.
This the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a website page compared to the total number of words on the page. For every keyword there should be 50 to 100 words of content.
5. Reading your content.
If you read your content out loud it will help with your writing, you will be able to see if the content flows and if there are any mistakes.
6. Page Titles.
You need to make your page title stand out from your competitors, there is plenty of content on the internet so you need to make your titles interesting enough for the reader to want to click through to your website. make sure you include at least one keyword in the page title.
7. Meta descriptions
This is the snippet of information displayed under the page title and url on the search engines, this little preview of information is used to entice your audience to visit your website and not your competitors. Google will only display 156 characters so there is no point in writing any more than this as it will not be shown.
8. Title tags
Using page headings will notify Google and the other search engines of the relevance of the content they will find on that page. There should only ever be one H1 on a page followed by H2s, H3s and so on.
9. Use images
Using appropriate images makes the web page more interesting, you can purchase images from companies like Istock photo or you can use a tool like Google Image Search Assistant to make sure the images you are using are not protected by copy right.
10. Update regularly.
This is in my opinion the hardest one to do as it requires time and that’s something that most of us don’t have. But it is important the website is updated and fresh content is add at least once a week. Another way to add content is to start blogging
